This Young Surfer and Shark Share the Same Wave in Australia

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A 10-year-old surfer has had a close encounter with a photo-bombing shark that shared a wave with him off an Australian beach.

Chris Hasson said Thursday that he was taking photos of his son Eden riding a wave off Samurai Beach at Port Stephens, 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Sydney, on Tuesday when something unexpected and indistinct caught his eye.

He discovered he had photographed the face of a twisting shark just below the surface with his son on an apparent collision course.

“I saw the second photo and (thought) — no way,” Hasson told the AP. “I quickly called him in and whistled.”

“He (Eden) saw a shape in the wave and thought it was seaweed and felt something as he went over the top — he got his leg rope caught on something — but he thought nothing of it until he saw the photo,” Hasson said.

James Cook University shark researcher Andrew Chin said the photographed shark was possibly a small great white.

“From the angle, it looks like the shark was spooked and is rolling away from the board to escape it,” Chin said. “There is no way that this is a hunting approach.”

Eden said he was glad he hadn’t seen the shark until he was safe on the beach and saw the photo.

“If I was on the wave and saw it, I probably would’ve freaked out and fell off,” Eden told Nine Network television on Thursday. “I was lucky I didn’t fall off.”

Port Stephens is on the northern coast of New South Wales state which has experienced an extraordinary increase in shark attacks since a Japanese tourist was killed by a great white in early 2015.

Hasson said he was back in the surf with Eden and his siblings, aged 12 and 5, on Wednesday to enjoy the final week of the school summer vacation.

“Everyone’s back to business. It’s too good a lifestyle sport not to,” Hasson said.

12 cherry tomatoes
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
3/8 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided
1 tablespoon minced shallots
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried herbes de Provence
1 1/2 teaspoons honey
1/2 cup pitted kalamata olives, halved
2 cups baby arugula
1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese

1. Preheat oven to 400°.
2. Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; drain and set aside.
3. Place asparagus and tomatoes on a jelly-roll pan. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Place pan back in oven, and bake tomatoes an additional 4 minutes. Remove tomatoes from pan; let asparagus and tomatoes stand 10 minutes. Cut asparagus into 1-inch lengths; halve tomatoes.

A new list has leaked purportedly revealing all Samsung smartphones that will be receiving an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The list includes the Samsung Galaxy S5, S6, S6 Edge and Edge+, Note 4 and 5, Galaxy Alpha, A8 and A7, along with others on the fence to make the cut.

Until now, Samsung has officially stayed mum on which of its smartphones will officially receive an upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Today, however, a list leaked purporting to reveal which handsets are set to receive the update across all smartphone manufacturers, and it included which Samsung devices made the cut.

The leak, which emerged out of China, listed the following Samsung handsets as confirmed to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: The Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Edge+, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S5, Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A7. A second column listed those Samsung smartphones whose receipt of Marshmallow is still up in the air. Smartphones listed in column two include the Galaxy A5, A3 and the entire E series.

If the report is true, that means that older handsets like the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 won’t be making the jump to Marshmallow. Also not listed are the Galaxy S6 Duos and Note 4 Duos. It would seem strange if those devices were not to receive updates along with their non-Duos counterparts, and it’s not clear if the list implies the variants are included with their more popular siblings.

Although the information seems plausible, it’s best not to put too much stock in the list until Samsung officially confirms which of its own devices will receive the update. A list purporting to be an incomplete confirmation of Samsung handsets set to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released several months ago and differed from the current one in excluding the Galaxy S5 as well as specifically mentioning the S6 Duos and Note 4 Duos.

It’s not clear whether Samsung will actually announce a confirmed list of devices set to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Some of the company’s rivals have made official announcements concerning which of their devices will receive the update, including HTC, Motorola and Google, which has already flashed factory images of the update for devices it announced will receive it.
